Start Your First eBay Account

September 5th, 2009 by Guest Author

E-Bay has sites registered in many different countries. Your first step should be to sign up with the e-bay site for the country in which you reside. As an example, Americans should sign up with eBay.com, and Australians with eBay.com.au.

For simplicity we will follow eBay.com as a representation for starting an eBay merchant account. First of all, you have to got to the eBay website. You will notice several menu choices available in the right corner side at the top, such as Buy, Sell, My eBay, Community, and Help. You don’t have to worry about these choices right now.

Look for the e-Bay logo on the top left hand side, where it says “Welcome! Sign in or Register”. Clicking on the word “registration” will take you straight through to the registration page.

Please fill in the form including name, address, telephone number, and any other requested information. It is important that the fields are filled in as accurately as possible.

Next, you will be prompted to create a username and password for your account on eBay. This is so that your personalized information can be recorded and tracked for ease of use on the site. So, be creative in your Username. If you are using eBay for only personal use or you want to sell products through this forum as an affiliate, relating your user ID to whatever you are promoting would certainly be a good idea. And, of course, if you want to connect your eBay account to an existing brick and mortar business keep this in mind when creating your User ID.

Of course, if you are only using this site for your personal hobby or entertainment any easy to remember ID will do. Please ensure that you are only utilizing names that are non-offensive and respectful. If you do plan on incorporating your hobby into a business venture eventually, please keep this in mind. I mean, how many people will take PrincessFiona99 seriously? So, common sense and a little foresight are integral to the success of any fledgling eBay endeavor.

Your next step is to choose a password. The best choice is a non-personal password that is not easily guessed. Including both letters and numbers makes your password more secure. Although e-Bay is a secure site, it is always best to choose passwords that are not easy to hack.

The final step is to choose a secret question, to which you will know the answer without thought. In the event you forget your password, this will enable e-Bay to verify your identity and provide your password to you. Choose a question to which the answer will never change, for example the name of your first pet.
